Every energy drink you've ever picked up has an ingredient list where a few names do the heavy lifting and the rest are along for the ride. Taurine is usually along for the ride — printed in big confident letters on the can, rarely explained, almost never questioned. It's been in the category for decades, and for most of that time nobody thought to ask why. We did. Here's what we found, and why mōcean doesn't have any.
The Ingredient Nobody Thought to Question
Taurine got grandfathered into energy drinks the way shoulder pads got into blazers: it was the eighties, it seemed like a good idea, and it stuck. It's an amino acid, it occurs naturally in your body and in foods like meat and fish, and in normal amounts it isn't some villain. That's worth saying up front, because the internet loves a scare and we're not selling one. But "naturally occurring" and "necessary in your energy drink" are two very different claims, and the industry has quietly leaned on the first to imply the second for forty years.
So What Actually Is Taurine?
Taurine is a sulfur-containing amino acid your body already makes and uses — it has roles in bile production, hydration balance, and how your cells handle stress. You get it from a normal diet without trying. Energy drinks add gram-scale doses on the theory that more must do more, which has always been a thin theory: the evidence that supplemental taurine improves everyday energy or focus in an otherwise healthy adult is, to put it kindly, underwhelming.
What the New Research Actually Says
Here's the part that made us glad we'd left it out. In May 2025, researchers at the University of Rochester's Wilmot Cancer Institute published a study in Nature showing that leukemia cells depend on taurine to grow. Leukemia cells can't make taurine themselves, so they pull it in from the surrounding bone-marrow environment through a specific transporter and use it to power their metabolism.
Read that carefully, because we're going to be honest about what it does and doesn't mean. It does not mean taurine causes cancer, and it does not mean your energy drink gave anyone leukemia. The study is preclinical — done in mice and cells — and much of the taurine involved is made by the body itself, not sipped from a can. The researchers' actual goal is a new leukemia treatment: starve the cancer cells of taurine. What it does mean is that the tidy old story — "taurine's natural, so it's fine at any dose" — is more complicated than the industry has treated it. And when the science on an ingredient is actively getting more complicated, loading it in by the gram looks less like innovation and more like inertia.
Why We Left Taurine Out
We didn't leave taurine out because of a 2025 study — we left it out from day one, because mōcean was built by a brewmaster who spent 36 years in beverage and formulates the way you'd hope: every ingredient earns its place or it doesn't go in. Taurine didn't earn its place. It's a decades-old default that survives on momentum, and "everyone else does it" has never been a formulation strategy we respect. The study just confirmed that skipping the ingredients you can't justify is rarely the choice you regret.
What We Use Instead
Instead of a gram of taurine and a marketing department, mōcean runs on a shorter, more deliberate list: real caffeine from green tea — 130mg, dosed for a workday, not a dare — alongside functional botanicals and adaptogens that are the actual point of the drink. The Bottom Line
Taurine isn't poison, and we're not going to pretend it is — that's the kind of overclaiming we started mōcean to get away from. But an ingredient that's coasted on "it's natural" for forty years, whose benefits for healthy adults were always shaky, and whose science is now getting genuinely more complicated? That's an easy one to leave on the shelf. We designed for focus, function, and follow-through. Everything else was optional, so we opted out.
Grown-up energy shouldn't require a leap of faith about what's in the can.
